The Lord is My Light (Psalm 27) is the winning entry in Harlow Chorus’ Young Composer Competition 2022 and receives its premiere at this concert. David McGregor (b.1995) has already won several awards and his music has been performed in cathedrals and concert halls across the UK.
Shadows of War, a beautiful short mass setting, was written to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, 1916-2016. Paul Mealor (b.1975) is one of the world’s most ‘performed’ living composers and has composed music for UK state, national and royal occasions, including the royal wedding and King Charles’ Coronation.
The majestic Mass in D major is one of the crowning glories of the British choral tradition. Ethel Smyth (1858-1944) was one of England’s foremost Victorian composers and the first female composer ever to be honoured with a Damehood. She was also a prominent Suffragette, credited with teaching Emmeline Pankhurst how to throw stones! You can read more about her at https://www.ethelsmyth.org
In addition, the Bishop's Stortford Sinfonia will perform Gustav Holst's Brook Green Suite.
