Dear Supporter,
Only four weeks to go before we crown our 50th season by singing Mendelssohn's mighty oratorio, Elijah, in Saffron Hall where we will be joined by singers from our MD's Cambridge choir, four excellent soloists and the British Sinfonietta helping us to raise the roof of this marvellous venue. Mendelssohn tells a story in music of punishment, retribution, comfort and salvation for the people of Judah who had been worshipping false gods. Elijah defeated the pagan priests but when, later, the peole listened to fake news and then blamed Elijah for all their woes, their saviour had to go into hiding protected by angels, before being told to go to Mount Horeb. Cue storms, earthquakes and fire, after which a "still, small, voice" emerged presaging the coming of God and the lifting of Elijah to heaven in a fiery chariot. Finally, the righteous prevailed and sang praises to the Lord.
