Description: When Brahms started work on his requiem for chorus, soprano and baritone soli, following the death of his mother in 1865, it was with the intention of composing a work which would console the living rather than focus on the dead.  He made a unique selection of text from the Lutheran Bible – hence it is a requiem in the German language, although Brahms always maintained that he would rather it were known as a Requiem for Mankind.  It opens with the words that bring solace to the grieving: “blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted”.
